Why Your Viking Range Won't Turn On: 7 Reasons

Your Viking range refuses to ignite. Before you panic, check these 7 common causes. Some you can fix yourself. Others need a professional.

A Viking range that will not turn on is not always a catastrophic failure. Often, the issue is something specific and fixable. Here are the 7 most common reasons your Viking range refuses to ignite, from the simplest to the most complex.

1. Gas Supply Interrupted. This sounds basic, but check it first. The gas valve behind the range or at the meter may have been accidentally turned off. Verify that other gas appliances in your home are working. If nothing has gas, call your utility company before calling us.

2. Igniter Failure. This is the most common Viking range repair we perform. The igniter is a small component that glows hot enough to open the gas valve and light the burner. Over time, igniters weaken and cannot reach the temperature needed to trigger the valve. You might hear clicking without a flame, or see a weak glow that never produces fire.

3. Spark Module Malfunction. The spark module sends electrical current to the igniter. When it fails, no current flows, and the igniter cannot do its job. This is an electrical component that requires professional replacement.

4. Gas Valve Failure. The gas valve controls the flow of gas to each burner. A failed valve will not open even when the igniter is working properly. You will see the igniter glow but no flame will appear. This is a safety component and must be replaced by a qualified technician.

5. Loose Wiring Connection. Vibration, heat cycles, and age can loosen the wire connections between the igniter, spark module, and gas valve. A loose connection interrupts the ignition sequence. Our technicians check every connection during diagnosis.

6. Control Board Failure. The control board manages all electronic functions in your Viking range. When it fails, it can prevent the ignition system from activating. Symptoms include a completely dead control panel or intermittent functionality.

7. Safety Valve Issue. Viking ranges include thermal safety valves that shut off gas flow if the system detects a problem. A malfunctioning safety valve can prevent gas from reaching the burners even when everything else is working correctly.
