Parts or replacement

Burner, igniter or the whole grill? Sorting out the parts question

Burners, igniters, valves, grates, heat shields and rotisserie motors can almost always be matched to a Viking grill once you have the model and serial from its rating plate. Whether to order one depends on the grill's age, the failed part, how often it has failed, and what removing a built-in from its island would take.

Parts first, then the bigger question

Straight answer · 1/3

Where can I buy Viking grill replacement parts?

Viking's own parts website, appliance-parts distributors and online grill-parts shops all sell them, and all of them sort their catalogs by model number. Copy the model and serial off the grill's rating plate, then order by part number rather than by photo. Valves, regulators and other gas-side parts should be fitted by a technician.

Two Viking grills of the same width can look alike from across the patio and still take different burners, valves or igniter leads, because parts change between production runs. That is why parts lists and exploded diagrams are filed by model, and why ordering from a picture so often brings home a burner that almost fits. If a built-in hides its plate, the installation papers or the invoice usually carry the model.

On a terrace near the lake, grates, heat shields and burners wear out as a matter of course; our Viking grill repair page covers the on-site work.

When fixing beats replacing

Straight answer · 2/3

Is it worth fixing a Viking gas grill?

Usually yes, as long as the firebox, hood and frame are sound. Burners, igniters, grates, heat shields, valves and rotisserie motors are all replaceable, and swapping them is far less disruptive than tearing a built-in out of its island. Replacement starts to make sense when the housing has rusted through or the same parts keep failing.

Four checks to run before ordering anything

In order

  1. Read the grill's age from its serial

Viking's recall notices explain that the first six digits of a serial number are the build date in month-day-year order, so serial 082421C10019872 came off the line on August 24 of '21. A serial that opens with six digits forming a sensible date gives you the grill's age without a receipt.

  2. Name the part that actually failed

Grates, heat shields, igniters and a single burner are wear parts. A failed valve or regulator is a bigger job but still a repair. Rust through the firebox, hood or frame is the grill itself.

  3. Count how often it has failed

The same igniter fitted again and again points to a cause nobody has dealt with, often water reaching the housing, which a proper fall shutdown prevents. Three or four different parts failing close together means the metal has had enough of lake air.

  4. Weigh what replacement means for a built-in

A built-in sits in a stone or masonry cutout tied to a gas line, and a new grill rarely matches the old opening to the inch. Recutting the counter and redoing the gas connection is a big price for a firebox that is still sound.

Gas smell — stop here

Gas odor at the grill? The parts can wait

Keep your hands off the knobs, the tank and the supply line, and do not light anything or flip a switch nearby. Leave the terrace or yard, and the building too if the odor has reached indoors. Call the gas company or 911 from outside, and arrange the repair only once they declare the area safe.

Three parts mistakes that cost owners a season

Corrected on the ticket

  • HeardIf a burner looks the same, it will fit.

ActuallyLength, inlet shape and the way a burner seats over its valve differ between look-alike grills; a near-fit burner can sit off the valve and burn yellow.

  • HeardA universal igniter kit does the same job.

ActuallyIt may spark, but lead length and electrode position are specific, and a spark landing off the ports gives slow, popping light-ups.

  • HeardOne rusted-out burner means the grill is finished.

ActuallyBurners are consumables on any grill kept near the water. Rust through the firebox or frame is what retires a grill.

Straight answer · 3/3

Is there a Viking grill parts diagram or catalog for my model?

Yes. Parts lists with exploded diagrams are published per model, and grill-parts retailers arrange their catalogs the same way. You need the complete model number from the rating plate, since width alone is not enough. Match the reference number on the drawing to the parts list, then confirm the part number before you order.

What to have in hand before you order or call

Tick off

  • Model and serial from the rating plate, or a sharp photo of it
  • Natural gas line or propane tank
  • Built-in or on a cart, and the island counter material
  • Which part is misbehaving, and any parts already replaced
  • Building access for a high terrace or roof deck

Order up

Not sure which part it is?

A technician can read the plate, find the failed part and say whether the grill deserves the repair. The visit is one $89 trip charge, put toward the repair if you approve it.

$89 service call: one flat trip charge, whether the technician opens up a single Viking or every Viking in the kitchen; that sum then comes off the repair total if you sign off on the work.

Grill parts questions from Chicago owners

Who makes Viking outdoor grills?
They carry the name of Viking Range, LLC, which belongs to the Middleby Corporation. Chicago Viking Masters is an independent repair company with no tie to either one, and Viking equipment is the only kind we work on.
Can I order Viking grill parts and fit them myself?
Grates, heat shields, a plug-in rotisserie motor or an igniter battery, yes, ordered by the part number for your model. Valves, regulators, gas lines and burner seating are gas work for a technician; our piece on when to call a technician draws that line for the whole kitchen.
Does Viking's coverage pass to me with a grill that came with my condo?
Viking's terms let coverage move to a later owner only through the sale of the home. With no receipt or registration, the production date in the serial becomes the start date. Units bought used, refurbished, as-is or as B-stock are excluded, as are products bought outside the United States and Canada.
Can a kit switch my grill between propane and natural gas?
Treat any fuel change as gas work. Viking's papers for its 5 Series gas ranges, for example, call for optional kit LPKPDR01 to move to LP and leave that conversion to a qualified installer or technician, not the owner. Your grill's parts list shows whether a conversion exists for it.
