Preparing Your Viking Grill for a Chicago Winter
Chicago winters destroy outdoor equipment. Your Viking grill needs professional winterization before the first freeze. Here is what we do and why it matters.
Chicago winters are among the harshest in the country for outdoor cooking equipment. Sub-zero temperatures, lake-effect moisture, freezing rain, and heavy snow put extreme stress on Viking outdoor grills. Without proper winterization, you risk corrosion, component failure, and expensive repairs when spring arrives.
Why Winterization Matters. Viking outdoor grills are built with high-quality stainless steel, but even premium materials suffer under Chicago's winter conditions. Moisture trapped inside gas lines freezes and expands, potentially cracking connections. Metal components contract and expand with temperature swings, loosening fittings. Accumulated moisture accelerates rust, even on stainless surfaces.
Our Winterization Process. At Chicago Viking Masters, we follow a comprehensive winterization protocol for every Viking outdoor grill. Step one is a thorough deep cleaning. We remove grates, heat plates, and burner tubes. We clean the firebox interior, removing all grease and food residue that can attract pests and cause corrosion over winter.
Step two is component inspection. While everything is disassembled, we inspect burner tubes for corrosion, check ignition electrodes, test gas connections, and assess the overall condition of each component. If something is wearing out, we recommend replacement now rather than a failed spring startup.
Step three is gas disconnection and line protection. We properly disconnect the gas supply, cap the line, and protect connection points from moisture intrusion. This prevents frozen gas lines and corroded fittings.
Step four is protective treatment. We apply food-safe corrosion inhibitor to exposed metal surfaces inside the firebox. External stainless surfaces get treated with a protective coating that repels moisture and prevents surface oxidation.
Step five is cover installation. We install a proper-fitting, weather-rated grill cover, secured against Chicago wind. A loose cover is worse than no cover — it traps moisture while allowing wind to whip the cover against the grill surface.
When to Winterize. We recommend scheduling winterization between late October and mid-November, before the first hard freeze. Call (872) 204-0530 or book online to schedule your Viking grill winterization. Gold Coast terrace and rooftop grills are our specialty.
